Black Hills Family Trip Planner

Gun Lake, MI → Custer, SD — 8 adventurers, 1 epic week

Last updated: March 1, 2026 | ~15–17 hr drive | 24 day trip options
JUNE — CONFIRMED MEALS — MIX COOK/EAT OUT CAMPGROUND — TBD 24′ CLASS C + POP-UP

Read this before planning anything else

Critical Alerts

Tunnel Restrictions — READ THIS

Needles Highway: 8′ wide × 9’9″ high
Iron Mountain Road: ~10–12′ wide × 10–11′ high

The 24-foot Class C motorhome WILL NOT FIT through Needles Highway. It likely won’t fit Iron Mountain Road either. These drives must be done in a 4WD.

Sturgis Rally? First two weeks of August are insane — campgrounds booked months ahead, prices surge. June is clear. Great timing choice.

Ground rules for the trip

Key Constraints & Guidelines

Trip Rules of Engagement

  • Max hike distance: 2 miles (comfortable for everyone)
  • Activity pace: 1–2 “big” events per day + smaller fun stops
  • Caves: Not all required — pick the best fit
  • Campground moves: Minimize. 2+ nights per location preferred.
  • Jeep trails: Interested, but guided tours are $$$ for 8. Mild off-roading OK in own vehicles.
  • Accessibility: Steep terrain / lots of stairs flagged ⚠️ — not limits, just so the family can plan ahead.
