Coffee Roasting at Home

Like many nerds that work in IT (computer stuff), I love coffee.  I take a few extra steps to make sure I get a good cup of Joe.  I roast my own coffee beans.  I put a few basic steps and pictures as an example.  You should try it.  It’s pretty easy.

Here is an example of what a roasted bean vs a green coffee bean looks like next to a penny:

Notice that the roasted coffee bean is actually larger than the green.

I roast the beans in the oven on a cookie sheet.  You can purchase a coffee bean roaster or several other devices (popcorn popper etc), but I prefer the oven.  Things are easy to control and it’s cheap.

This is a pan of beans about 1/2 way through the roasting process:

Here is a pan that is almost done:

I’m not sure if you can see it in the picture, but there is a lot of smoke coming off of these things.

Roasting coffee doesn’t smell as good as I thought it would.  The smoke is much more heavier and bitter than I thought it would be.  It’s a very interesting process.

There are a lot of resources online if you want to try this (or shoot me a note).

It’s the best cup of coffee I’ve ever had.
